Average hitter who accomplished 200 hits a year twice in NPB. He experienced winning a championship twice and is the only Japanese Major Leaguer who will join the WBC team.

He is the first player who accomplished 200 hits a year twice in NPB in 2005(202 hits) and in 2010(209 hits). He won many titles such as rookie of the year, best hitter for average and stolen base leader. During off-season in 2011, he moved to Major League by using the posting system, played with four clubs and contributed as lead-off man of Royals to its advancement to the Wrold Series in 2014, which was for the first time in 29 years. As of SAMURAI JAPAN, he played in the first WBC in 2006(played 6 games and went 1 for 5) and in the second WBC in 2009 (played 9 games and went 12 for 37), and especially in the second WBC, he performed well, led the team with . 324 batting average and 7 RBIs and was chosen for Best Nine of the tournament.

This is his third WBC and he is the oldest player in his team. He will play with a question of what it means to be a Japanese. He will wrap up halfway through his training camp with Astros, a club which he joined from this season and is his fifth in MLB, and catch up with the Japan national team, but this man who won a championship twice, has played overseas and knows about opponent players is very dependable.
